Speech Language Specialist (SLS)

You must be certified as a Speech-Language Specialist (SLS) in order to work as a speech-language pathology in the New Jersey schools. The SLS Certificate requires:
A Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology
300 clinical hours, with a minimum of 100 in work with children with speech, language, hearing disorders.
A score of at least 162 on the Praxis Specialty Exam in SLP (send scores to codes below)
As you graduate from a NJ graduate program, the institution will file your application for Certification as an SLS with the Department of Education. You can also file independently, if you wish however it is strongly recommended to apply through Kean. Instructions below:
Our program will prepare students to meet all of the academic and clinical practica requirements for the SLS, and the University will submit your certification application for you through the Office of Teacher Certification. Please read these directions carefully. Your praxis scores are required. Scores should have a test taker ID, Social Security number, and must be sent to the codes below:
Sending Scores:
New Jersey Department of Education: 7666 (*NJDOE automatically receives score once you choose to report your scores after completing the test)
Kean University of NJ SLP/AUD: 0178 (also submit hard copy to University at the time of submitting SLS certificate application)
Kean University: 2517
ASHA- Certification: 5031
NJ Audiology/SLP Advisory Committee: 7668
**Note: If you do not list these places at least three days before the test, you must pay $50 PER recipient after your scores arrive. **
