Students applying to work in NY schools, must apply for a Initial TSSLD certificate. The form and requirements are listed below:

Initial Certificate, Speech and Language Disabilities

(valid for five years)

1. Pathway: Approved Teacher Preparation Program

  • Completion of a NYS-registered program – Speech and Language Disabilities

  • Institutional recommendation – Speech and Language Disabilities

  • New York State Teacher Certification Exam – Educating All Students Test (EAS)

  • Workshop – Dignity For All Students Act

  • Fingerprint clearance


2. Pathway: App Prep Program Transitional B Certificate (exams completed on/after 5/1/2014)

  • Holds/Held a Transitional B Certificate

  • Completion of a NYS-registered program – Speech and Language Disabilities

  • Institutional recommendation – Speech and Language Disabilities

  • New York State Teacher Certification Exam – Educating All Students Test (EAS)

  • Workshop – Dignity for All Students Act

  • Fingerprint clearance

3. Pathway: Approved Teacher Prep Program – Additional Certificate

  • Hold a valid NYS Classroom Teaching Certificate

  • Completion of a NYS-registered program – Speech and Language Disabilities

  • Institutional recommendation – Speech and Language Disabilities

  • New York State Teacher Certification Exam – Educating All Students Test (EAS)

  • Workshop – Dignity for All Students Act


4. Pathway: Individual Evaluation

  • Education – Bachelor's Degree

  • Minimum 2.50 undergraduate GPA

  • General core in Liberal Arts and Sciences – 30 semester hours

    • College coursework: Artistic Expression, Communication, Information Retrieval, Humanities, Language other than English (including ASL), Written Analysis and Expression, Concepts in Historical and Social Sciences, Scientific Process, and Mathematical Processes

  • Content core – Speech and Language Disabilities – 30 semester hours

  • Pedagogical core – 21 semester hours

    • College coursework: Human Development and Learning; Teaching Students with Disabilities & Special Health-Care Needs; Teaching Literacy Skills Methods (3 semester hours); Teaching Literacy Skills (3 semester hours); Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment; Foundations of Education

  • Additional pedagogy – Speech and Language Disabilities – 6 semester hours

    • College coursework: Foundations of Special Education and Assisting SLD students and teachers with teaching and learning of the general education curriculum

  • College supervised practicum – Speech And Language Disabilities – 150 clock hours

  • New York State Teacher Certification Exam – Educating All Students Test (EAS)

  • Workshops – Child Abuse Identification, School Violence Intervention and Prevention, and Autism, and Dignity For All Students Act

  • Fingerprint clearance


5. Pathway: Additional Classroom Teaching Certificate

  • Hold a valid New York state teaching certificate

  • Content core – Speech and Language Disabilities – 30 semester hours

  • Pedagogical core

    • College coursework: Teaching Literacy Skills Methods (3 semester hours)

  • Additional pedagogy – Speech and Language Disabilities – 6 semester hours

    • College coursework: Foundations of Special Education, and assisting SLD students and teachers with teaching and learning of the general education curriculum

  • College supervised practicum – Speech and Language Disabilities – 150 clock hours

  • Workshops – Child Abuse Identification, School Violence Intervention and Prevention, Autism and Dignity For All Students Act

  • Fingerprint clearance


6. Pathway: Completion of a College Teacher Education Program in another U.S. State

  • Completion of a comparable approved program in another jurisdiction – Speech and Language Disabilities

  • Education – Bachelor's degree

  • Miinimum 2.50 undergraduate GPA

  • New York State Teacher Certification Exam – Educating All Students Test (EAS)

  • Workshops – Child Abuse Identification, School Violence Intervention and Prevention, and Dignity For All Students Act

  • Fingerprint clearance


7. Pathway: Endorsement of a Classroom Teaching Certificate

  • Possess a valid, comparable, U.S. State or Territory Certificate – Speech and Language Disabilities

  • Bachelor's degree or hHigher

  • Minimum 2.50 undergraduate GPA

  • New York State Teacher Certification Exam – Educating All Students Test (EAS)

  • Workshops – Child Abuse Identification, School Violence Intervention and Prevention, Autism, and Dignity For All Students Act

  • Fingerprint clearance


8. Pathway: New York State Professional License

  • License and Registration – NYS Speech-Language-Pathology License

  • Workshops – Child Abuse Identification, School Violence Intervention and Prevention, Autism, and Dignity For All Students Act

  • Fingerprint clearance


9. Pathway: ASHA Program

  • Master's or higher degree – ASHA Accredited Speech-Language Pathology Program

  • Clinical Practicum in School Setting – 150 Hours

  • New York State Teacher Certification Exam – Educating All Students Test (EAS)

  • Workshops – Child Abuse Identification, School Violence Intervention and Prevention, Autism, and Dignity For All Students Act

  • Fingerprint clearance
